On Sunday, November 10th 2013, Choice Management CEO/Owner Barbara Choice had the pleasure of managing the 2nd Annual Spoken Word Billboard Awards. In seeking a new venue, and to relocate the Spoken Word Billboard Awards, the founder, Michelle E. Alford hired Barbara Choice as the Publicist/Event Manager for the event. In discussion, it was suggested by Barbara for the founder, Michelle Alford to check out the Busboys and Poets at 5th & K Street NW, Washington, DC. After researching and connecting with the staff at the Busboys and Poets chain, founder, Michelle Alford made the decision to host the event in Washington, DC. As a result, the 2nd Annual Spoken Word Billboard Awards sold-out and proved to be the right decision to host this year’s event in Washington, DC.
The 1st Annual Spoken Word Billboard Awards was held in a state-of-the art theater in Canton, Michigan; however, with overwhelming success with this year’s event, the founder has decided to make Washington, DC the home of Spoken Word Billboard Awards. This year’s event was hosted by Detroit radio personality Quincy L. Lewis. Music provided by DJ A-Milli. There were people in attendance traveling from, as far as, Canada, New York, Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, Hollywood CA, Alabama, Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, as well as locally.
The Spoken Word Billboard Awards presented a special evening of live musical and poetic entertainment including captivating performances by dance crew expressionist D-Money Obey & Crew, spoken word artists Davin & Joshua Austin, hip hop artist Florence James, comedian Peter Davis, rapper Dom-O The Spartan, spoken word artist Mina Holliday, and many more.
To top the night off, awards were handed out to honorees that were recognized for their talents, efforts, creative muse, and global effectiveness in their communities. A representative for NFL player Josh Morgan accepted an award on his behalf. The Spoken Word Award for Hot 100 Top Ranking Artist of the Year went to Oracle. The Spoken Word Award for top venue of the year went to Busboys and Poets. Spoken Word Award for community service of the year went to Russel Blake, an advocate for domestic violence. Spoken Word Award for best perfect bound collection went to Tumika P. Cain.
This year’s event was truly a success, and we are in great anticipation for next year’s show!
